The MEP Intergroup Extreme Poverty and Human Rights of the European Parliament is an all-party official working group of Deputies of the European Parliament. It promotes a comprehensive and coordinated approach to poverty eradication through integrating efforts to overcome poverty into all EU policies including employment, health, social protection, education, youth, culture, economic and monetary union, budget, the free movement of persons, etc.
The Intergroup work is based on a partnership with EU citizens who face long-term hardship because of poverty and social exclusion. “Expert by experience’ and the organisations that represent them usually participate to the Intergroup meeting
For the 2014-2019 European Parliament Legislature the Intergroup is co-facilitated by the Co-Chairpersons: Mrs Verónica Lope Fontagné (Spain, EPP) and Mrs Silvia Costa (Italy, S&D) and the Vice-Chairpersons: Mrs Jean Lambert (Great Britain, Greens/EFA) and Mr Thierry Cornillet (France, ALDE).
There are usually around three public meetings of the Intergroup per year, one of which is held on the UN International Day for the Eradication of Poverty.
This year the meeting takes place at the European Parliament in Brussels in room JAN 4Q1 from 3pm to 5pm on 17 October.
