The Social Justice Week at the Maynooth University , now in its fourth year, runs from Monday 13th to Sunday 19th October. A range of informative and creative activities are planned for the week which coincides with internationally significant dates – International Day of Rural Women (15 October), World Food Day (16 October) and International Day for the Eradication of Poverty (17 October).
The Social Justice Week committee this year specifically chose the title “Social Justice Week 2014 – A Call to Action” as it believes that this week is a rally call to the Maynooth community to actively get involved in the area of social justice and to get an insight into the types of great work that is taking place in both Ireland and the wider world as various individuals and communities try to make the world a better place.
The Social Justice Week committee is asking all contributors to the week to highlight practical ways in which our staff and students can actually get involved in the area of social justice and begin to make a positive impact on the world around us.
Maynooth students have demonstrated time and time again their commitment to reach out to people on the margins of society both in Ireland and abroad. Students will have a central role in all aspects of the week, with strong involvement by the Students’ Union and by Student Services and academic staff.
A Moment of Solidarity: There will be a moment of solidarity held at 12 noon each day, calling all students and staff to stop and reflect for one minute in solidarity with people struggling daily against poverty, exclusion and the denial of human rights and those working to end social justice.
